Enhancing Informal Electronic Waste Recycling Tools and Methods
2019
Discarded products that contain electronic or electrical parts are considered electronic waste (e-waste). High-income countries often export electronic waste to be recycled in less expensive settings resulting in economic opportunities for workers in low-income communities. However, current informal recycling methods, which use crude tools and methods, create many health and safety hazards for both the worker and their community, effectively resulting in a global transfer of human health risks.
Assessment of Occupational Safety and Health Issues in Aircraft Maintenance
January 2019 – December 2019
At an aircraft maintenance base in the Middle East we studied occupational health and safety risks among workers. Our objectives were to analyze injuries, near misses, safety hazards, and noise; and to evaluate the relationships between multiple measures of safety and safety climate. We gathered data from 64 maintenance workers who completed a baseline survey on occupational safety and health factors, an activity diary, and a full-shift noise measurement. We also assessed the associations between reported safety climate at the work-group level and the prevalence of self-reported injuries and near misses to evaluate the role of safety climate in these events.
Exposures and health effects among Swedish paper mill workers
2012
There are an increasing number of studies which indicate that exposure to noise may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Shift work is also a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, as is exposure to pulp and paper dust. This study investigated the relationships between noise exposure, dust exposure, shift work, and cardiovascular disease in a cohort of more than 8,000 soft tissue mill workers in Sweden.
