Academic Research Lab Hazards

Project name: Occupational hazard identification and risk assessment for professional and student researchers

Investigator(s): Richard Neitzel (PI) and Aurora Le

Team: Anupon Tadee

Funding source(s): Rackham Graduate Student Research Grant; BCSP Research-Doctoral Dissertation

Study period: August 2021 – present

Description: A web-based survey will be utilized among the target population, which includes UM professional researchers and students. The survey questions will address self-reported workplace hazards and exposures, job-related morbidity and injuries, demographics and lifestyle factors, health and safety practices, and the validated Perceived Stress and Work Safety Scales (PSS and WSS, respectively). A risk assessment considering health and safety hazards for professional and student researchers will be conducted, accounting for both the intensity and prevalence of exposure, and a job exposure matrix will be developed. In addition, health and safety perceptions between professional researchers and students will be compared using WSS result.

Objective: The objective of this study is to understand the occupational hazards, health risk factors, psychological stress levels, and health and safety perspectives of research faculty and staff, as well as of the students who assist with their research.

We have three specific aims:

  • Develop and conduct a survey to assess the presence of health and safety risks as well as the associated health impacts, such as perceived stress levels, among both professional and student researchers.
  • Perform a risk assessment specifically focused on health and safety hazards encountered by both professional and student researchers.
  • Compare the perspectives on health and safety between professional researchers and students by utilizing the Work Safety Scale.
